An earthquake measuring 7.9 hit the region including Pakistan and Iran this afternoon. (Tuesday)
Iranian state television reported that at least 40 people have been killed and hundreds injured in the tremors.
An Iranian government official said it was the biggest earthquake in Iran in 40 years and the death toll is likely to increase.
Tremors were felt across several Pakistan including Quetta‚ Pishin‚ Killa Abdullah‚ Chaghi‚ Sibi‚ Jaffarabad‚ Karachi‚ Hyderabad‚ Quetta‚ Badin‚ Peshawar‚ Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Federally Administered Tribal Areas also felt the jolts.
16 people were killed and many more injured in the Panjgur and Mashkeel area of Balochistan. 50 people sustained injuries in Karachi in the incidents of the roof collapse.
Over 1‚000 houses in Pakistani areas have been partially damaged in Balochistan.
Tremors from the earthquake were felt as in India‚ Afghanistan and the Gulf States. Across the Gulf‚ high-rise buildings swayed and authorities ordered evacuations.
According to Azmat Hayat of Pakistan Meteorological Department‚ the epicenter of the earthquake‚ which struck at 3.44 pm‚ was in Iran near Pakistan border. He said the depth of the quake was about 15.5 kilometers and as the depth was not much deep‚ therefore‚ the tremors were felt across the region.
To a question‚ he said aftershocks are normal phenomenon in such major earthquakes.
President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of lives and property in the earthquake in Iran and Pakistan.
Meanwhile‚ Chief Minister Balochistan while expressing grief and sorrow over loss of life and property in the quake in the province has directed administration to immediately launch relief operations in the affected areas.
